Palestine Film Series - The Teacher

In this gripping drama by Oscar nominated and BAFTA winning director Farah Nabulsi (The Present), Palestinian schoolteacher Basem (Saleh Bakri) faces personal turmoil after a tragic incident involving his son. He finds solace in a deep bond with his student Adam and British social worker Lisa (Imogen Poots).

Meanwhile, an American attorney and his wife push for the return of their son, an Israeli soldier held by a Palestinian resistance group, leading to tensions over a potential prisoner exchange. The intertwining stories lay bare the contrast in a world shaped by power and disparity, culminating in a gripping narrative full of unexpected twists.

The film was shot entirely in the West Bank, particularly in Nablus, over three months, and released in 2023.  Runtime is 118 minutes.  There will be a discussion after the screening.

Sponsored by MAPA, Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice and the Environment, Somerville for Palestine, Cambridge for Palestine, and First Parish Cambridge’s Middle East Education group.

Weaponizing Water to Erase Palestine

Water is life — and Israel’s systematic theft, restriction, and destruction of Palestinian water resources is extinguishing both daily survival and an entire way of life. While Israeli settlers building ‘Eretz Israel’ consume over 350 liters of water per person daily, West Bank Palestinians survive on a fraction of that. In the Gaza Strip, where the population has only a few liters of clean water per capita per day, Israel’s deliberate deprivation of water has triggered a severe health crisis and been denounced as a genocidal act. Our panel will discuss Israel’s use of water as a weapon of ethnic cleansing and genocide, and how we can respond.

Wired to Steal: Zionism and the Shaping of the Western Mind

A book talk by Yoav Litvin and Ilan Pappé

Since the Hamas assault of October 7, 2023, and for more than three years, Israel has been engaged in what has been described by a consensus of international experts as a genocide.

Can Israel’s actions be explained by retribution, “self-defense,” revenge, or the quest to free hostages, or are these narratives masking something deeper? How has Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestine shaped the violence we are witnessing today?

Wired to Steal is a powerful blend of investigative narrative, history, and behavioral neuroscience. Cutting through and dismantling propaganda, it exposes how the ruling classes of settler colonial projects hijack the human brain’s fear circuitry, systems of addiction, empathy pathways, and identity mechanisms to make oppression feel normal, even righteous. At its core, the book is about psychological hacking: how political systems are designed to exploit human vulnerability to fear and social belonging in order to turn communities against others, justify mass violence, and conceal theft as self-defense. Zionism is presented here as the most urgent, real-time case study, yet the book’s framework applies to settler colonialism worldwide.

Drawing on decades of research in neuroscience and extensive historical scholarship, Wired to Steal combines vivid storytelling, clear science, and deep moral urgency to reveal the playbook of settler colonialism, and to offer a roadmap for dismantling it.
